Le Jardin de Jean (John’s Garden)
by Yiting Lee
Sharing is caring: a lesson about the importance of cultivating plants (and good friends) in a story that brings together the greediness of Uncle Scrooge and the perseverance of the little boy in The Carrot Seed.
In John’s garden nothing grows. So, when he sees that Ruby’s garden is full of beautiful roses, he thinks he’s found the solution: he pushes Ruby out of her garden and makes it his own. But then he realizes that his neighbor Vicky has even better violets. So he decides to expand his garden by absorbing Vicky’s, and Henry’s, then Micky’s… But guess what? No matter how big John’s garden gets, his plants get bugs, lose their petals, and wither. John will discover that a garden, like life, is more beautiful when shared.
